Assuan is the RPC library used by the various GnuPG components. The Assuan protocol allows one to talk to arbitrary Assuan servers using GPGME. See Using the Assuan protocol.
The ASSUAN protocol is specified by GPGME_PROTOCOL_ASSUAN.
